Corpus VR Relieves Pain and Anxiety Using Virtual Worlds

Corpus VR is an innovative therapy platform that uses virtual reality to relieve pain, stress and anxiety through gamification.

Corpus VR is a new virtual platform that combines VR technology, gamification and psychosomatic mechanics to offer users compelling virtual worlds to exercise in. Developed to address the needs of a high-pressure society where stress can lead to physical and mental fatigue and even physical pain, the platform ensures that the user is relaxed, motivated and focused on movement while performing a series of challenging exercises. The combination of challenges and matching rewards helps users get a better mental balance or overcome pain, as their brain releases small amounts of dopamine during exercise, which leaves them feeling better.

Corpus VR uses an app and a headset that connects to iPad or Android tablets. Therapists get insights into clients' need for exercise on the tablet and then choose matching therapy environments and exercises. They can also adjust the degree of difficulty in real time, based on the client's progress. The app supports different virtual reality headsets, including the Samsung Gear VR and Cardboard VR, and will soon be compatible with Oculus Rift, OSVR and HTC Vive.

Corpus VR can be used in physical and psychosomatic therapy or neurological rehabilitation. It motivates patients to spend more time doing the therapeutic exercises and, as a result, therapists can expect faster results in psychosomatic training. The platform empowers both practitioners and clients by offering a tool that helps clients on both a physical and mental level while providing therapists with data that shows them exactly what improvements the clients are making in real time. The platform allows therapists to adjust virtual environments and difficulty levels to keep clients engaged and it offers an excellent way of visualizing the range of motion of the patient's movements.

Corpus VR was developed by InMotion VR, a company dedicated to transforming the way we look at the therapy process by introducing gamification to therapy. Based in the Netherlands, the company collaborates with a number of partners to share knowledge and make continuous improvements to its product. The partners include OSVR, Mindfield Biosystems, the Academic Hospital in Gent, Belgium, and the Radboud University Medical Centre.
